六价铬盐在工业过程中大量使用。它们也可以作为腐蚀抑制剂广泛地用在开放的或封闭式的冷却水系统中。
在铬酸盐的检测方法中，六价铬与二苯卡巴肼在酸性条件下反应，形成一种红-紫罗兰色的物质。分析结果用光度计法来定量，或用目测法同标准溶液比较，结果用ppm CrO4表示。
